Fresh off taking his first International Triathlon Union (ITU) World Triathlon Series (WTS) title, France’s Vincent Luis took the first step towards defending his Super League title by taking the first event of the 2019/ 2020 season in Jersey, while his countrywoman Cassandre Beaugrand took the women’s race.
High winds forced race organizers to cancel the bike leg in yesterday’s Enduro event. That meant the women competed in three continuous swim-run efforts. The weather cleared a bit for the men later in the afternoon, but while conditions improved later in the afternoon for the men, it was still considered too dangerous to bike, so the men did four swim-run sessions.
Saturday featured two semi-final races where the top five men and women from each semi-final, along the next five fastest athletes from either race, made it through to Sunday’s final. The two Canadians in the field, Matthew Sharpe and Tyler Mislawchuk, finished eighth and ninth in the first semi-final, won by Luis.

After winning the first semi-final group on Saturday, Beaugrand continued her winning ways, leading from the opening swim to take the women’s race on Sunday over the American world champion (and defending Super League champ), Katie Zaferes. Rachel Klamer, the winner of the second semi-final on Saturday, rounded out the podium.
Luis followed his win on Saturday with a confident win over countryman Pierre Le Corre – the two stormed out in front early in the race and Luis pulled clear on the final run lap to take the win. Behind Le Corre was the other semi-final winner from Saturday, New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde.
