Over 2,300 athletes made the trip to Texas on the weekend for the second Ironman 70.3 Waco triathlon. Australia’s Sam Appleton led from start to finish, even managing to hold off the fast-riding American Andrew Starykowicz on the bike, to take his second 70.3 title of 2019 after breaking his collar bone in April.

Starykowicz, who had to pull out of the Ironman World Championship at the last minute because of “bronchitis/pneumonia,” hung tough for second, with Australian Joe Gambles rounding out the podium.

Canada’s Stephen Kilshaw trailed by just under two minutes after the swim and was just under 11-minutes behind Appleton in fifth starting the run, but ran a 1:16:59 half-marathon to move up a spot to finish fourth.

In the women’s race South Africa’s Jeanni Seymour led the way out of the water, but it was American American Alissa Doehla who was first off the bike, with Seymour about 50 seconds behind, Canadian Melanie McQuaid a minute down in third and another American, Jackie Hering, in fourth, 1:37 behind Doehla.

Out on the run it was Hering who would charge through the field to take the win, with Seymour also getting passed Doehla for second. McQuaid, who is coming off a brilliant runner-up finish at Ironman Wisconsin last month, took fourth, continuing her comeback after a few years of dealing with injuries. (We caught up with McQuaid for this Q and A after her race in Wisconsin.)
