It’s hard to know who was more disappointed when Jan Frodeno announced that he wouldn’t be able to compete at last year’s Ironman World Championship in Kona – the three-time Kona champ, the two Norwegian superstars (eventual champ Gustav Iden and Tokyo Olympic champ Kristian Blummenfelt), or triathlon fans around the world. With the Iden and Blummenfelt declaring their intention to focus on World Triathlon events this year as they look to compete at the Olympics in Paris, and Frodeno announcing this was his last year of professional racing, it looked like we’d never get to see the three compete against each other.
While nothing official has been announced, based on an Instagram post from the Professional Triathletes Organization (PTO), it looks like we’ll get to see the dream match up at the PTO European Open in Ibiza on May 6.

“I’m putting all this hard work and practice in the hope of seeing you guys at the PTO European open. It’s just struck me that for the first time in 20 years, I need a wild card, because it’s become quite a hard thing to get into,” Frodeno said. “Just wondering if you could put in a word for me, and also if you guys would show up.”

In a follow up video, Blummenfelt said: “Relax Jan, I think I know someone who knows someone, who knows someone, so I will do a few phone calls and get you in. See you in Ibiza.”
While there was no word from Iden, it sure appears that the PTO is gearing up for an epic race between the three stars in May.
