Haug is a two-time Olympian, representing Germany at the 2012 and 2016 Games. She turned to long-distance racing after that, winning her first Ironman 70.3 race in Lanzarote, then taking second to Holly Lawrence in Bahrain later that year. In 2018 she really started to show her long-distance promise, taking Ironman 70.3 Abu Dhabi and Oceanside, then taking second behind Lucy Charles at the Challenge Championship in Samorin. She finished fourth in her Ironman debut in Frankfurt at the Ironman European Championship, then went one spot better in Kona, finishing third.

After spending much of 2019 injured, Haug burst back with a huge win at Ironman Copenhagen, setting the stage for her dramatic win in Kona.
