Queensland, Australia just wrapped up 12 days of racing for the 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships Townsville, with just over 3,000 athletes representing 38 different national federations competing in 19 different world championship events.
The racing concluded yesterday with the Long Distance Triathlon World Championship, won by Spain’s Antonio Benito Lopez and France’s Charlene Clavel. The race consisted of a 3-km swim, 114-km bike and a 30-km run.
Benito Lopez (5:02:53) pulled away from Australia’s Steve McKenna (5:06:03) on the run to take the win after finishing second at this event in 2023 in Ibiza. Belgium’s Louis Naeyaert rounded out the podium in 5:07:29.
In the women’s race Clavel also ran her way to the title after her countrywoman Julie Iemmolo led the way off the bike. Clavel (5:45:14) would pull clear and then hold off Poland’s Marta Lagownik (5:47:16), who was competing in her first long-distance race, for the win. Iemmolo (5:51:04) hung on for the final spot on the podium.
The field at Sunday’s race in the Long Distance Triathlon and Aquabike races included over 1,000 athletes.
