Michael Brown, the race director of the inaugural World Triathlon Multisport Festival held in Penticton in 2017, passed suddenly on Aug. 31, 2024. Brown was 51. He is survived by his wife Jacqueline and their two children, McKinley and Jonah.
A former competitive swimmer, Brown was also an avid rugby player before turning his sights to triathlon.
“I grew up swimming and did the swim relay at a triathlon in 1986,” Brown told the Penticton Herald in 2016. “I swam and played rugby and eventually I had to make a choice between one or the other. Rugby had beer so it was rugby. At age 35, when I retired from rugby, I looked at triathlon as a way to stay fit.”
Brown would eventually go from being a participant in the sport to a busy race director.
Brown took over the popular Great White North triathlon in 2012, and would eventually purchase Challenge Penticton, putting that event on for five years. He was the executive director of L’Etape Canada by Tour de France, and also worked with Super League Triathlon (now supertri) as the senior director of events.
