As they did in Chicago a few weeks ago, New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde and Georgia Taylor-Brown (pictured above winning supertri Chicago) proved they are at the top of the supertri game right now, taking convincing wins to ensure they’ll stay at the top of the supertri standings.
The supertri races include three triathlons in a row made up of a 300 m swim, 4 km bike and a 1.6 km run.
Hayden Wilde gets his supertri win as Alex Yee struggles. Georgia Taylor-Brown tops women’s race
Taylor-Brown ran clear of a tight pack on the final run, using the short-chute her team had earned to hold off a fast final charge by Olympic champion Cassandre Beaugrand (FRA) for the win. The Frenchwoman had battled hard on the last of the three swims along with Boston supertri winner Jeanne Lehair join a lead group of five that included Olivia Mathias, Taylor-Brown, Emma Lombardi (FRA) and Americans Taylor Spivey and Kirsten Kasper.
The group stayed together through the last of bike legs, setting up a one-mile dash for the finish line. Beaugrand had pushed to the front, only to have her lead eradicated as Lehair and Taylor-Brown were able to use their short-chute advantages to get back to the front.
Taylor-Brown powered clear with a few hundred metres to go, only to have Beaugrand put in a furious kick over the closing stages of the race to pass Lehair and come perilously close to taking the overall win. In the end, though, Taylor-Brown was able to hold on for the win ahead of Beaugrand and Lehair, with Spivey taking fourth.
Wilde takes another London title
The Kiwi had already won two supertri races in London, so it was hardly a surprise to see him at the front once again. As in Chicago, Olympic gold medalist and Boston supertri winner Alex Yee was never in the mix, while Wilde found himself battling up at the front with a group that included Australian Matt Hauser, France’s Leo Bergere and Vincent Luis.
The group stayed together through to the final run, setting up a sprint for the finish. As with the women, Wilde was able to take advantage of the short chute to pull clear of the rest of the men, powering his way to a second-straight win and handy lead in the overall supertri standings. Hauser would take second, with Bergere rounding out the podium.
