Just to be clear, Ironman CEO Scott DeRue was no slouch on the athletic department when he took the new position earlier this year. As we noted when he arrived at Ironman, but for the fact that you haven’t been able to get a tourist visa to Papua, New Guinea since 2018, he’d have climbed all of the world’s “seven summits” – the highest mountains on each continent. He’s done six of the seven, including Everest, and last summer he completed the 250 km Gobi March Ultramarathon.
New Ironman CEO brings passion and business chops at a turbulent time for the company
DeRue made it clear that it wasn’t going to be long before he would do his first triathlon, suggesting that he was determined to “engage and connect with our community,” and saw participating in a race as a great way to do that.
Today he achieved that goal, finishing Ironman 70.3 North Carolina in 5:48:08. That included a 32:18 swim, a 2:55:10 bike and a 2:06:19 run.

We had a chance to catch up with DeRue in Nice – stay tuned for a story on that conversation this week.
