Multisport Triathlon Series cancelled for 2020
Here’s part of a letter sent out to participants of Ontario’s Multisport Triathlon Series today:
The Road Forward to 2021
We are writing to you today to announce the cancellation of the remaining events in the MultiSport Canada Triathlon Series.
This has been an awful decision for us to make, but we know it is the right choice as our top priority has been to bring you a Fun and Safe race experience.
One thing is certain: we will back with you in 2021, stronger and keener than ever before.
Why Now?
Originally, we had planned to communicate with you on a race by race basis, but we felt it was not responsible to wait any longer. Nor are we willing to bet on the fact that our situation will change sufficiently to be able to look you in the eye on race day, certain that you are safe at our event.
Could an Event Happen?
We have been tackling this very question for the past few months. We’ve done the math and we could create events with: reduced race capacities; expanded race sites; enhanced hygiene protocols; spread-out starts; no awards; no food; no handshakes at the finish; and absolutely no close contact with any of your friends or fellow athletes. Stakeholder permit approvals for any large events are far from certain right now but we felt we needed to explore all options.
For many of you, even this muted experience would be acceptable, if only to race again. We salute that ‘never-say-die’ attitude but we are also responsible for you – all of you. We strive for a zero margin for error and this is more than your health and our reputation are worth. If just one of us is not safe, no one is safe.
So, even if hosting one event might have been possible, we are not going risk the trust you have placed in MSC over the past nineteen years for the benefit of the one or two races with higher risk.

Challenge Championship age group race cancelled for 2020
The event in Samorin, Slovakia originally scheduled for this weekend was postponed to August – today we learned that the age group part of that race won’t happen this year, according to a release sent out by Challenge-Family today:
The Championship 2020 Age group race has been cancelled: registrations and qualifications move on to next year
The postponement of Challenge Family The Championship to August 16th, as communicated a few weeks ago, was based on hope for better times. Although the situation is improving, at this point of time it turns out to be impossible to host a big event with many participants and today the organisers had had to make the final call that this iconic race cannot take place for age groupers this year. Athletes, who are already qualified or registered, will get the opportunity to take part in next year’s edition of The Championship, without extra costs or qualifications.
“The postponement to August 16th was already a very difficult decision for us and to defer it to next year is an even more difficult call,” said Challenge Family CEO Jort Vlam. “But with all the restrictions still being taken around the world to get a grip on the COVID-19 virus, especially all the travel restrictions, unfortunately it is really not possible to organise a race for thousands of enthusiastic Age Groupers who would come to Šamorín, Slovakia from a few dozen countries.”
Challenge Family and X-Bionic Sphere are still considering the possibility of organising a pro-only race. “As this won’t be a mass-participation event this might be an option to offer at least something to the professionals of our sport, who are now also struggling without races,” says Vlam. “But this is depending on technical and safety regulations in and around the venue. We will explore the options in the upcoming weeks and decide latest before July 1st.”
‘Hope to see you next year’
“We can’t wait to have you back in Šamorín next year and we hope to see the very most of you all racing at the iconic X-Bionic Sphere then. To make this as easy as possible for all those athletes, we will send mails to all the registered and qualified athletes with all the possibilities we offer them,” says Race Director Melisa Kubalková. “For now we wish you all the best and lots of health. Stay strong, stay positive and see you soon!”
Viborg Powerman Middle Distance Duathlon World Championships moved to 2021
There was more news from World Triathlon today around world-championship postponments – this for the middle-distance duathlon worlds:
Due to the continued situation with the COVID-19 outbreak, the local organizer committee of the 2020 Viborg ITU Powerman MD Duathlon World Championships has been forced to move the event to autumn 2021. The new date will be announced as soon as possible.
“This has not been an easy decision and we know this announcement will upset the athletes’ plans”, said the organization. “We are aiming for a world-class event, with participants from all over the world. We, therefore, have to take into consideration that some athletes might not be able or allowed to travel to Denmark in October 2020, furthermore we acknowledge that many international athletes don’t feel safe travelling in these times. We are still looking into an autumn scenario for the World Championships in Viborg next year”, they explained.

Platinum Racing’s top priority is the health and safety of staff, volunteers and athletes. Despite these troubling times, our team is still working hard to stage races for you in 2020.
Since November, 2019, we have solicited registration income totaling 35% of our typical budget. We have spent the entirety of those funds on overhead, salaries, advertising and deposits, all in anticipation of a successful 2020 season. At this time, our plan is as follows:
- Events will be postponed to September and October. We are working on re-booking our venues and will communicate dates as soon as possible.
- We encourage you to participate in our series of SOLO CHALLENGES over your favorite race course to stay sharp until we race again. Our digital leader board will offer a benchmarks for community engagement.
- If we are forced to limit gatherings to 250 people, we’ll cap the field or stage the event weekend in waves.
Event insurance isn’t available to organizers or our customers for pandemics or tornadoes or other Acts of God. That’s why we note this in your registration waiver. We don’t have a rainy day goodwill trust like the big marathons and this isn’t a hobby business, it’s our only business. We will communicate what, if anything, we can offer you in terms of deferrals when we have a better understanding what part of our season or our company can continue to next year.
Remember as endurance athletes you are an example to your families and friends. Stay positive, stay safe, stay active and get ready to celebrate your fitness later this summer!

Barrelman update
The largest independent half-distance race in North America sent out an email to day with an update on the status of the event. That read, in part:
Current status of Barrelman 2020
As things stand, Barrelman is scheduled to take place on Sept 20. However, it remains unclear whether we will be allowed to host a mass participation sporting event in Ontario in September. Given the dynamic nature of our new normal under the menace of COVID 19, it is also unrealistic to expect a clear answer in the near future. The truth is, no one knows what will and will not be permissible.
Decision Date: on or before July 15
Knowing that you all need to plan, MSC has set a decision date of July 15 to determine whether we can proceed with the race. Between now and then, we will be working around the clock to get the answers we need to answer the following critical questions:
- Is MSC allowed to host a public gathering of up to 3,000 people (athletes and spectators)?
- The volunteer team in Welland has supported Barrelman and our series races for fifteen years. The vast majority of the fifty or so are older folks over the age of 70. We have to consider the possible risk to these volunteers.
- Given the Welland volunteer situation above, can MSC guarantee the recruitment of the hundreds of volunteers necessary to support you, our athletes?
- Will the relevant authorities be able to confirm MSC’s permits?
- Can MSC confirm that paid duty police and EMS bookings are still available?
- Has MSC given you, our athletes, enough time to plan for travel and accommodations?
- Will athletes have enough time to train for the race, especially the swim?
One way or another, we will know the answers to these questions by July 15.

Challenge Championship postponed
Challenge Family announced yesterday that The Championship has been postponed from May 31 to August 16 due to “travel restrictions, the impact on athletes’ preparations and a general concern for the health situation.”
“This hard decision has been made after extensive consultation with all parties involved,” says Challenge Family CEO Jort Vlam. “We still see opportunities to organize a race later this summer.”
“The postponement is one filled with hope for better times, but because the developments surrounding the coronavirus and therefore the measures imposed change almost daily, we will keep monitoring the situation and make a final decision latest on May 31st whether The Championship can continue or not,” Vlam continues. “At that time we will know more about the situation in August than we know now and there is still time to arrange travel and training. We guarantee that, from our end, we will do everything within our power to arrange this and work as hard as we can, but unfortunately we don’t have any control on the impact of the coronavirus.”
“Of course we understand that this decision will have a big impact on our athletes and that there will be a few uncertain weeks ahead. We’re very sorry about that and of course we would have liked things to be different. We know this is a very bitter message, but we remain positive towards the future and we have hope and confidence that we can organize The Championship on August 16th. Of course we also understand that this solution might not be suitable for all athletes. Still we can guarantee you that we have tried to find the best alternative for as much athletes as possible and we hope for everyone’s understanding.”

WTS Montreal to evaluate on April 13
Patrice Brunet, the president of the Montreal Triathlon, sent a message out today letting athletes know that, for now, plans are still in place for this year’s event, which will serve as the National Triathlon Championship here in Canada in addition to hosting some of the world’s top triathletes for the ITU World Triathlon Montreal.
Organizers are working from home right now and will convene with the ITU once the Quebec government reviews “the current state of confinemen,” Brunet says.
“In all transparency, I can’t hide from you that we are also working, in parallel, on a contingency plan which would include a postponement of the event to the end of the summer,” Brunet says. “It would be irresponsible not to do this exercise. We are not there yet, and if these discussions are to be concluded, you will be the first to know. In the meantime, there is no reason to make a hasty decision. Our ship is not as big as the Olympic Games, we have the benefit of time ahead of us. Not a lot, but some.”

Multisport Canada provides update
One of the largest race series in the country, Ontario’s Multisport Canada, offered an update to athletes earlier today:
We know that many people are wondering what will be happening to specific races and the 2020 season because of COVID-19. For MultiSport Canada it is simply too soon to know what will happen to individual races or the season however, we felt we should do our best to give you as much information as we can.
What We Know Today
At this point in time we have no plans to cancel any events in 2020. Our first races of the season, Gravenhurst and Welland, are thirteen and fifteen weeks away respectively, with Bracebridge over four months away. While we have no plans to cancel, we are researching options to move some races to later in the season. To that end we have been and continue to be in touch with each of the municipalities where we have our races to determine if they have made any decisions around mass gatherings and the options for dates later in the summer.
If and when any race is rescheduled, postponed or cancelled we will immediately contact each registered athlete by email, post to our website www.multisportcanada.com and post to our social media (Facebook, Instagram & Twitter). Please do not attempt to contact our offices by phone as our staff are currently working from home.
We especially would like to thank all of the people who work in front line healthcare. If you have cause to interact with any of these amazing people please be sure to thank them! Remember to follow the guidelines published by the Government of Canada. https://www.canada.ca/en/public-health/services/diseases/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection/health-professionals/public-health-measures-mitigate-covid-19.html

Challenge Salou postponed until September
Here’s the official statement that appeared on the Challenge Salou website – the event has been postponed until September 27, 2020.
Dear Athletes,
With regret we have to inform you that Challenge Salou cannot take place on March 29. The official authorities just announced that all events in the whole region in the next weeks have to be postponed, as specified in the PROCICAT action plan for emergencies associated with emerging communicable diseases with high-risk potential.
In Challenge Salou we are forced to make decisions for the good of all: athletes, family, spectators, etc.
But we will continue to work on a great triathlon event this year. We have been able to secure a new date, in compliance with the measures dictated by the health authorities. This new date will be September 27, 2020.
All registrations will be automatedly changed to September. In case an athlete prefers to move the registration to the edition of 2021 (03/28/2021) or 2022 (date to be specified), he/she can send an email to the organization (info@challengesalou.com) and the slot would be saved, at no extra cost.
Thank you very much for your understanding.
