It’s been a tough year for pro triathletes, who spent a good portion of 2020 anxiously trying to figure out if they’d be able to compete at all this year. With that in mind, a group of pros, with the help of Barrie Shepley and the C3 Triathlon Club, organized the Canadian Pro Triathlon Championship a few weeks ago.
Tonight we’ll have a chance to see the video coverage of the event put together by CBC and Ironworks production (long-time triathlon producer Greg McFadden’s company.) The show goes live tonight at 9 PM EST – you can click on the link below to watch the coverage.
In anticipation of tonight’s coverage, here’s a photo gallery from Triathlon Magazine Canada editor Kevin Mackinnon, who covered the event in Caledon. (Click on the images to enlarge.)
Dominating swim
Kira Gupta Baltazar dominated the swim leg with her 16:55 split.
Time to hit the water
The three-loop swim course offered spectators a chance to see the athletes a few times during the swim.
Capturing the action
Trent Dilkie has no qualms getting in close to capture the staggered swim start.
Aero advantage
Rach McBride powered to a 1:03:25 bike split, three minutes faster than the second-fastest bike split of the day - Pamela-Ann St-Pierre's 1:06:32.
Kretz hangs in
The day's second-fastest swim and second-fastest run put 2016 Olympian Amelie Kretz in second place overall in her first non-draft-legal race ever.
Aero tuck
Jackson Laundry worked his way through the field on the bike.
Smile for the camera
Swim leader Charles Paquet was one of the few ITU specialists to ride a TT bike.
Is this another workout?
Frequent training partners, Jackson Laundry and Taylor Reid push up the long, gradual climb on the 1.3 km loop.
Jamnicky sticks to the road bike
Like many of the ITU specialists in the race, Dominika Jamnicky was on a classic road bike for the 40 km bike.
Dominant bike leg
Jackson Laundry's 55:51 bike split was over 90 seconds faster than the next fastest in the field, Brent McMahon.
Taylor Reid
One of the key organizers of the race along with Jackson Laundry, Taylor Reid couldn't hold off a fast-running Jeremy Briand for the final spot on the podium.
Cody Beals
The two-time Ironman Mont-Tremblant champion would have no-doubt preferred the race to be three or four times as long, but stayed competitive with a sixth-place finish.
Rach McBride in front
After a dominating bike leg, McBride leads the way onto the 10 km run course.
Running sensation
While it would be easy to attribute Tamara Jewett's big win to her impressive 34:59 run split, her improved swim and bike times set the stage for her come-from-behind win.
Karol-Ann Roy
Last year's national champion pushing hard on the run.
Powering through the run
Once he came off the bike with the lead, there was no touching Jackson Laundry, who stayed out in front to the finish line.
Still has it
Olympian Brent McMahon's storied career includes numerous sub-8 hour Ironman performances. He turned 40 five days after the race, but proved he can still compete with the youngsters with a runner-up finish.
Briand and Paquet duel on the run
ITU specialists Jeremy Briand, the defending men's national champion and Charles Paquet are caught on camera pushing hard during the 10 km run. Briand would run his way to third.
Offering a helping hand
As a volunteer runs to get water to them, Paquet helps Briand out with a water bottle.
Jason Pohl
The long-distance specialist would finish eighth.
